Discernment in our Culture

Aug 26, 2026    Lois Flewelling

We are living in a culture filled with competing voices, shifting values, powerful influences, and constant information. More than ever, believers need discernment—not simply to recognize what is obviously wrong, but to distinguish truth from deception when the difference is subtle. Discernment in Our Culture explores how to remain spiritually alert in a world that often blurs the lines between truth and error, good and evil, and conviction and compromise.

In this message, Lois Flewelling examines how culture shapes the way we think, what we accept, and even how we interpret spiritual truth. We will look at the importance of allowing Scripture and the Holy Spirit—not popular opinion, emotions, fear, or cultural pressure—to become the lens through which we see the world around us.

God has not called His people to withdraw from culture, fear it, or simply criticize it. He has called us to discern it, understand the times, recognize what is influencing our generation, and carry His truth, wisdom, and presence into it. Like the sons of Issachar who understood the times and knew what Israel should do, we need eyes to see what is happening beneath the surface and wisdom to know how to respond.

This message is an invitation to become spiritually awake—to recognize deception without becoming suspicious, to stand for truth without losing love, and to navigate our changing culture with courage, wisdom, and spiritual clarity. We were never called merely to survive the culture around us. We are called to discern it and become carriers of the Kingdom within it.
